Background of the study
Digital language contact in Nigerian online communities has been dramatically reshaped by the pervasive use of WhatsApp groups. These groups serve as hubs where users from diverse linguistic backgrounds interact, negotiate meanings, and blend elements of indigenous languages with global lingua francas (Okoro, 2023). In these spaces, language contact is not merely incidental but a dynamic process that leads to the emergence of hybrid forms and the reconfiguration of linguistic norms. WhatsApp groups foster continuous language exchange through text messages, voice notes, and multimedia, which creates fertile ground for the evolution of new lexical items and grammatical structures. This phenomenon is particularly significant in Nigeria—a multilingual society—where digital communication accelerates language contact and convergence. The study explores the mechanisms through which language contact occurs, examining the sociocultural factors that influence language choice and the subsequent emergence of hybrid linguistic forms. Furthermore, it investigates how these interactions contribute to a broader digital discourse that transcends traditional boundaries of language use, reflecting shifts in identity, community, and communication practices (Ibrahim, 2024). The research will document the interplay of languages in these groups, analyze patterns of borrowing and codemixing, and assess the implications for linguistic theory and practice in digital contexts (Afolabi, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Despite the widespread use of WhatsApp in Nigeria, there is limited empirical research on how digital language contact shapes linguistic outcomes in online communities. Current studies often overlook the complex interactions and resultant hybrid forms that emerge from sustained multilingual exchanges in WhatsApp groups (Chukwu, 2024). This gap hinders a comprehensive understanding of the sociolinguistic impact of digital communication. The study seeks to address this by systematically analyzing language contact phenomena, examining both lexical and grammatical innovations, and identifying the socio-cultural drivers behind these changes (Okoro, 2023).

Objectives of the study

  1. To analyze the patterns of language contact in Nigerian WhatsApp groups.
  2. To identify hybrid linguistic forms emerging from multilingual interactions.
  3. To evaluate the sociocultural factors influencing digital language convergence.

Research questions

  1. What patterns of language contact are evident in Nigerian WhatsApp groups?
  2. How do hybrid linguistic forms emerge from these interactions?
  3. Which sociocultural factors most significantly influence language contact in these groups?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides insight into how digital communication fosters language contact and hybridization in Nigerian online communities. The findings will inform sociolinguistic theory and digital communication strategies, offering practical implications for language planning and education (Okoro, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study focuses exclusively on WhatsApp groups in Nigeria and analyzes language contact phenomena in these online settings. It does not extend to other digital platforms or offline interactions.

Definitions of terms

  • Language Contact: Interaction between speakers of different languages leading to linguistic change.
  • WhatsApp Group: A digital community on the WhatsApp platform where users communicate through text and multimedia.
  • Hybrid Linguistic Forms: New language varieties that emerge from the blending of two or more languages.
